GRAND TOTAL FOR THE WEEK - $83.28 (over budget by $23.28)

As you can see I went over my budget by a lot this week because I made a run to Trader Joe's to stock up on a few items. I would have spent just under $60 otherwise and been right on budget. I mainly needed nuts and I also wanted to get some of their frozen strawberries to make ice cream on Sunday for a Mother's Day treat. I bought some of their strawberries last time I went there and they were excellent. I'm sure that I would have paid more for them at Walmart and the quality would have been poor.

I also splurged on a couple of huge steaks at Kroger. They have them on sale this week for $3.99 pound if you spend at least $10.00. Plus I had a store coupon for $2.00 off a meat purchase of $10.00 or more. After the coupon, the steaks cost me about $3.22 pound.

I picked up the Holmes Smokehouse Apple & Gouda chicken sausages because they were marked down and sounded interesting. Although they have 2 carbs per link, the ingredients don't sound too bad:

Chicken, Gouda cheese, dehydrated apple, apple juice, seasonings (they do list sugar as a "seasoning"), vinegar, pork casing

  1. I've not tried the Walmart brand of frozen strawberries, but I can say their fresh produce is very poor quality - at least at the Walmarts here in Austin. It's a shame that with their buying power they can't provide better quality produce to their customers. I usually do the majority of my shopping at Walmart and then make a trip elsewhere for produce.

Enjoy those steaks and ice cream, and Happy Mother's Day!

    1. Thanks, Maria. Walmart's frozen strawberries used to be decent. In fact I often would buy the 5 pound bag (I think it was 5 pounds) to have on hand for making smoothies, etc. Now they're usually almost white and have very little flavor. I haven't bought strawberries from Kroger in years so I don't know how theirs are. I'm pretty sure that they started putting sugar in theirs so I stopped buying them there.

I do buy some produce from Walmart. Their mushrooms and tomatoes are usually fine. Celery and green onions are OK too. I'll also buy green peppers there if the price is good and they don't look wrinkled.
