Aldi

I just want to mention that tomorrow I plan to finally check out the new Aldi store down the road from me. I'll post again tomorrow about any bargains that I find there. In the meantime, feel free to post in the comments about what you like to buy at Aldi or other stores, such as Trader Joe's, Kroger, Walmart, HEB, etc. It will be a busy shopping day for me tomorrow if I go to HEB, Aldi, Walmart and Kroger. I'd better head out as early as possible before it gets too hot. They're predicting 97ยบ for Thursday here.

  1. Aldi's is great, has some of the best prices around for decent quality produce (I can usually get a pound of blueberries for strawberries there for 99 cents for example).

  2. I plan to get some grape tomatoes (59-cents for a pint) and 8 ounces of fresh mushrooms for only 69-cents. Those are some of the things featured in this week's Aldi ad.

  3. I'm fortunate that my Aldi's and the HEB have been in a price war on eggs since they opened a couple of years ago. I still get a dozen eggs for .39 at Aldi! But to balance it out, I still get fresh eggs from my next-door neighbor's chickens for $1.00/dozen sometimes, too.

I really like Aldi's produce and dairy products. I buy string cheese there a lot, and I like their cream and half-n-half.

    1. Wow! Those are cheap eggs. Our Aldi advertises eggs for 79-cents per dozen every week. There is an HEB practically across the street so maybe they'll start a price war too.

  4. Hadn't looked at the ad yet, usually don't go shopping till Sunday morning. But those are great bargains. I've also been really pleased with the quality of the Roma tomatoes they have at the 2 stores we shop at out here in Katy.

If you haven't been to an Aldi's before a couple of things to remember, always take a quarter so you can get a cart and bring your own bags.

HEB, Aldi, Walmart and Kroger - that's the pretty much the stores we shop at, with the occasional addition of Target.

    1. I'm so glad that you mentioned that about the quarter and shopping bags, Kerry. I had heard that before, long before Aldi came to Houston, but totally forgot about it.

    2. You're welcome, hopefully you had a good shopping experience there today. I stopped by the Trader Joe's at Shepard and Alabama during my lunch break and picked up few interesting tidbits that looked interesting - some Kerrygold butter, some yummy Irish and Spanish cheeses, some Spanish olives, tuna in olive oil, a couple canned protein shakes, and some Psyllium Husk Powder (now I finally have everything I need to try my hand at making that Oospie bread stuff).

    3. I'll write about my shopping trip to Aldi tomorrow. After going to four grocery stores this morning in the heat, and cooking and other things when I got back, etc., I'm too tired to do much tonight anymore.

  5. I commented a few posts ago recommending Aldi... My Aldi shopping list always has:
    -eggs (.69)
    -hwc(1.99 I think)
    -cream cheese (.99)
    -block cheese (1.79)
    -sour cream (1.something)
-frozen long green beans and asparagus
-cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, peppers, onions and mushrooms are usually cheaper at Aldi than walmart for me
    - I also like their canned chicken

Let us know how your adventure goes!!

  6. Kerry, that's "heavy whipping cream".

  7. Totally off topic...............
Checked out your muffin recipes and didn't see any using grated carrots. Can I adapt one of your existing muffin recipes using 2 cups of shredded carrots and, if so, which one would you recommend?
I found 7.40 carbs in one cup of shredded carrots, sound right to you?

    1. How about my Zucchini Flax Muffins - http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/zucchini_flax_muffins.html? I used 3/4 cup (about 4 ounces) of shredded zucchini in my recipe. Zucchini only has a couple of net carbs, vs. about 7 net carbs for that much shredded carrot, so your count does sound about right. Two cups of shredded carrots sounds like a lot unless you're planning to make a huge batch of muffins.

    2. Yes, I think that will work just fine. I am out of hwc, will just have to use almond milk, but otherwise I have what I need. I am planning on baking a full dozen.

I received baby carrots in my organic veggie delivery this week and since I still had quite a few carrots left, I needed to find a way to use them. I will have 2 cups of the grated carrots left after eating one more salad, so that's why I decided to look for a good muffin recipe. And, as usual, your site is always the answer to my baking/cooking dilemmas!

      Thx
