Aldi, the sequel...

I needed to get some milk for the "boys", and some mushrooms for the Mushroom Chicken and Sausage Casserole that I'll be making on Thursday, so I decided to make another drive down to Aldi this morning. I would have waited until Thursday, when I do my regular grocery shopping, but I wasn't sure if the mushrooms would still be on sale for .69¢ after today.

I thought about getting another container of the fancy lettuce that I bought last week but they had a note on the door explaining that due to the high demand they haven't been able to keep it stocked. So, instead they were selling the iceberg lettuce for only .69¢ instead of .99¢. We're not lettuce snobs in our house so iceberg would do just fine, especially for that price.

While I was there, I decided to get some more of the cheeses that I got last week. I got the last package of sliced smoked cheese that they had, which was cheddar this time. They had plenty of the blocks of flavored cheese left and this time I got the Pepperoni Marinara flavor. I also splurged and got a pint of their heavy cream. I'd meant to buy a quart while I was at HEB earlier this morning but totally forgot about it until I got home. Lastly, I bought some pork rinds that I hadn't noticed last week. Maybe I didn't see them because I had my "blinders" on while going down that gauntlet of chips, cookies and candy on entering the store last time. They were only .99¢ per 3.5-ounce bag. I usually pay $1.50 per 5-ounce bag at HEB so Aldi beats the HEB price by .02¢ per ounce. I'm hoping that they will taste as good as HEB's, which are the best tasting ones I've found to date. Goodness knows how some brands make their pork rinds taste different than other brands but they do. I'm talking about the plain ones which are just pork skin, oil and salt.

Speaking of HEB, while I was there early this morning, I noticed a brand of coffee that I hadn't seen there before. I noticed it because the price was under $4.00 per 11-ounce bag. It didn't appear to be a special or sale so maybe it will always be that price. I've set a limit of $4.00 as the most I will pay for a bag of coffee. The brand is Un Momento and the price was $3.78. I bought some decaf Breakfast Blend and a bag of regular Vanilla Creme. This afternoon I tried the Vanilla Creme and I like it a lot. It almost tastes sweet even though they don't list sugar on the label (please tell me that they can't put sugar in coffee and not tell anyone). It seems to have almost a mild chocolate flavor which is quite pleasant. Here's a link to the site for the company that makes the coffee: Coffee Bean International. I will definitely buy that coffee again if the price remains the same. Hopefully the Breakfast Blend will be just as good.

My husband's eye surgery went very well yesterday and today he went back to the doctor to have his eye checked and the patch removed. Jerry was amazed that he can actually see normally with that eye now. The doctor removed the lens from that side of his glasses because he'll no longer need them for that eye. Although his other eye does have the start of a cataract, his vision is still 20/20 in that eye with his glasses on. It will be a several weeks before he can get new glasses. His eye needs to heal first and then a new prescription will be written for his glasses.

  1. I'm glad your husband's eye surgery went well. Have you noticed their canned parm. cheese? It is so much cheaper than the store brands around here. I usually buy two cans at a time. I have not seen that coffee, but will look when I go next time. It sounds wonderful! (I would hope there wouldn't be any sugar in it!) Enjoy and have a great week! - Dawn

    3. That's about the same as what I pay for parmesan at Kroger.

    5. I assume that you mean the kind that comes in a green can, right? It's $2.62 for an 8 ounce can here and I get a 10% senior discount on Kroger brand products which brings it down to $2.36. That's actually slightly lower than Aldi's price.

At Walmart I can get Bel Gioioso parmesan cheese in an 8 ounce wedge for $3.98 and it's just as good as the real kind from Italy. I buy that occasionally and keep it in the freezer. I have a few recipes where I prefer to use that kind instead of the canned stuff. I first heard about the brand on America's Test Kitchen and luckily Walmart sells it. It's very good and the price can't be beat.

  2. I just thought of something that I forgot to mention yesterday about Aldi. I didn't notice this the first time I went there but you can only pay with cash or a debit card; no checks or credit cards.

    1. Oh yeah, that could be an issue for some folks, I tend not to think anything of that, as I don't use credit cards and never carry checks with me.

    2. The Pepperoni Marinara cheese is yummy (very pizza-like in taste), we also picked up a Blueberry Cheddar Cheese that was really tasty.

Glad to hear your husband's surgery went well and wish him a speedy recovery.

    3. I didn't see any Blueberry Cheddar there and I'm not sure if that would appeal to me or not. What was the carb count like on that one?

    4. The package indicates 0 carbs per 1oz serving.

  3. I just figured out one reason why HEB's pork rinds are my favorite brand. I tasted some of the ones from Aldi a few minutes ago and they're unbearably salty. I never realized until now that the ones from HEB are only very lightly salted. Every other brand that I've tried has been very, very salty.

  4. I'm sorry to say that I'm a little disappointed with the heavy cream from Aldi. It seemed very thin like milk to me and it didn't seem to make my coffee as creamy as I like it. I thought maybe it was my imagination but I don't think so. This morning I finished up the last of it and started on a new carton of cream from Walmart. I used the Aldi cream in my first cup and the Great Value cream in the one I'm drinking right now. I could see going in that the Great Value cream was a lot thicker. It also has a richer, creamier flavor than the cream from Aldi in spite of it having milk added to it now.

  5. I finally got around to trying the decaf Un Momento coffee this morning and it's awful. I think it must be dark roast but it doesn't say on the label. I foolishly assumed that "breakfast blend" was always a lighter roast because with other brands that is the case. All I know is that it smells and tastes bad and not like coffee at all. Hopefully my husband will drink it. He usually mixes regular and decaf when he makes his coffee. I just dumped some of the Un Momento coffee into his decaf can and it's so black that I think they must have burnt it. I'm sure that it's not supposed to be like that.
