Tuesday Bargains

I went to Food Town, HEB and Aldi this morning and left early to beat the heat. It's supposed to hit 100 degrees today. It's hard to believe that I've already been to Aldi at least four times now. Didn't I say something a few posts back about only going there occasionally??? Silly me. I think I've found a slightly quicker way to get there, or at least it doesn't seem to take as long. I cut through our subdivision and go out the back way which cuts off at least a mile and eliminates several traffic lights.

Once again, I got some nice deals at all three stores, but not so many at Aldi today. I got a dozen eggs there and those are always 89-cents. I needed green peppers for fajitas this week but they weren't so cheap at Aldi this time. I was stuck though and had to buy them there at three for $1.69. I guess that's not so bad at 56-cents each. I really could have used more than three peppers but I didn't really need six this time so I'll make do. I bought some of their pork rinds and they're not as salty as they seemed the first time I bought them. HEB was out of the plain ones so I to buy Aldi's or do without. I do like that Aldi's pork rinds tend to be smaller pieces than other brands.

The only good deal at HEB today was on salsa. Near the checkout, they had two shopping carts filled to the brim with all different brands and types of salsa marked down to either $1.00 or $1.50. I picked out four jars of the dollar ones. I usually buy the hot variety but there were only mild and medium ones in the cheaper jars. I did make sure that none of them had added sugar but I did see some unusual salsas that had raspberries or pineapple in them. Obviously I avoided those but they were intriguing.

Here's what I bought at Food Town:
  • 4 8-ounce cans of tomato sauce at 4/$1.00
  • White onions - .39 pound
  • 1 bunch cilantro - 50-cents
  • Boston butt roast - $1.29 pound
  • Boneless chicken breasts - $1.99 pound
  • 2 huge prime rib steaks marked down to $2.99 pound

I've never had prime rib steaks before so hopeful they'll be good. They look a lot like rib-eye steaks but with a bone. The chicken breasts are huge at nearly 3/4 pound each. I usually wait until I see Boston butt roasts for 99-cents per pound but $1.29 wasn't bad. They did have some ground beef marked down to 99-cents per pound but I've got a nice stash of it in my freezer and I really wanted to buy those steaks. Plus, the hamburger looked very brown like it had been sitting around too long.  Since this blog is called "In the Kitchen with Linda", would anyone be interested in seeing photos of my kitchen? It's very tiny but I'm happy with it. In spite of the small size, I've got plenty of counter and storage space.

  1. I look forward to your blog posts, particularly the one on Thursday as I make the same grocery run--Kroger and Walmart--on Friday morning. So it's very timely. As to your question, yes, I'd like to see pictures of your kitchen, along with any tips you have for organizing an LC kitchen.

  2. It seems like you are very organized and do a lot of cooking and prepping so i would love to see how your kitchen is set up.
Maybe I will pick up an idea or two to streamline and organize my kitchen.

  3. Yes, please put up pictures of your kitchen! I have a small kitchen too that I just love...it forces me to be efficient.

I have a question today, too. I am wondering if you have ever come across a product that I just found at the grocery store today. It is a small bottle very similar to those Mio drink mix squirty things, and it's store brand and labeled "Liquid Sweetener contains sucralose". Says "great in hot and cold beverages" and "one squeeze, about 1/16th teaspoon, is as sweet as 1 teaspoon of sugar." It was only about $3.50 so I thought it was worth a try. Are you familiar with this product, Linda? I wonder if I could bake with it? Thanks for any insight you might have.

    1. That sounds like a store brand version of Sucralose to Go (http://www.sucralosetogo.com/) which I've seen at Walmart. Due to the way it's dispensed, I think it's better suited to sweetening beverages than for cooking or baking. There's no way to measure it accurately. Just how much is a "squeeze"??? Bear in mind too that it's not as concentrated as liquid Splenda such as Sweetzfree or EZ-Sweetz. I did the math once and it came out a lot more expensive per serving than regular liquid Splenda. It is nice though that you can finally buy liquid Splenda in stores.

    2. Thank you Linda, I'm not going to try baking with it and run the risk of wasting my expensive almond flour! I'm going to order some Sweetzfree or EZ-Sweetz.

  4. Me, I'd love to see how your kitchen is set up.

Also, I'm impressed the eggs are 89 cents consistently at Aldi. They vary their price here (in OH) a lot. Anywhere from 99 cents to $1.59/ dozen.

I've also learned from watching you tube videos on how to de bone at split chicken breast and make my own boneless - sometimes skinless cuts. Some times I can get them for as low as 99 cents a pound. It takes some time, but not too difficult, if I can do it anyone can. If I want tender like pieces, I slice them up, put them on wax paper lined cookie sheets with space between them, let them freeze for an hour or two, then zippy bag them up. Thanks again, I really enjoy your blog!

    1. Maybe they're trying to lure people into the store since Aldi is new around here. I think they opened in June. Every week there's been a little box on the front of their ad showing milk for $1.89 per gallon and eggs for 89-cents.

I like to roast bone-in breasts and cut up the meat for recipes. I think the bones help keep the meat from drying out.

    2. I agree, with the bones keeping the meat moist. I forgot to mention that I then save the bones to make chicken broth in the crock pot.

Your FoodTown sounds like a great store! Happy Cooking!

    3. I just realized that the price of Aldi's eggs has changed since I started shopping there. The first couple of times I bought them there they were 79-cents per dozen and now they're 89-cents.

  5. hi Linda, I am just getting back to low carb and your posts are so helpful.
I am not planning on doing any baking for awhile but am wondering what your sweetener of choice is for baking?

    1. I can't use sugar alcohols so I just keep it simple and use liquid Splenda (Sweetzfree). It works fine for most things except for recipes that contain chocolate.

    2. thank you Linda, I had previously used granular Splenda but was never really happy with it. I will add some Sweetzfree to my list.
