THURSDAY'S SHOPPING

I'm going to stop posting my menus at least for a while. I'm will be making very boring food for myself and I might make more high carb dishes for my husband because he won't want to eat what I'm eating. The reason is because I've been dealing with acid reflux for many years and it's gradually getting worse. It started back when I was pregnant with our son over 30 years ago. I've been taking generic over-the-counter pills for it but they're not working as well as they used to and I don't like taking them because I don't think that they're very good for me. So, I'm going to try eating mostly plain meats, eggs and cheese with very little seasoning or sauces. I'll have to stay away from diet soda, coffee and other beverages except for water and I won't eat any tomato sauce, chocolate or spicy foods that make the reflux worse. Frankly, all foods seem to cause it lately but some foods are worse than others and I can't go without food completely. All I know is that I need to do something because it's making me miserable and I can't afford to take more expensive medication for it. Surgery is out as well because I can't afford anything like that. One other thing that I might try is eating very small amounts of food spread throughout the day instead of eating three regular size meals. I read that tip for acid reflux online somewhere.

  1. Hi Linda.

I've struggled with acid reflux and had been on Nexium for several years. A few years ago, I took myself off of Nexium because it was expensive and I didn't feel it was helping all that much. My mom recommended Pantoprazole, which is a generic. My insurance (Express Scripts) pays $8.35 and my co-pay is $2.09 ... this is for a 90 day supply. Honestly, this generic is great and has helped a lot!

    1. Thanks for the tip, Christina. The trouble is that I've got Obamacare and I can't afford to use it because of the huge deductible. The only benefit of the plan is that I don't have to pay a monthly premium (my subsidy covers it 100%) and I'm covered in case of a major emergency. That just means that if I had an accident or something, it wouldn't completely empty out our bank account to pay for it like it would if I had no insurance at all. Visiting a doctor for something minor is out of the question.

  2. I'm so sorry to hear that you are having physical problems, Linda. I'm sure your doctor knows what is best for you. I always find a lot of good advice through Dr. Mercola. I hope you might find some info you can use. Here is one article of many that he has listed on his site:

I hope you find some relief.

    1. Thanks for the link, Georgene. I don't have a doctor so my condition hasn't been officially diagnosed. I'm pretty sure though that I've got a hiatal hernia from when I was pregnant with my son. I know that my mom had one. Dr. Mercola addresses this as the cause but his advice is a bit confusing. He goes on to give some suggestions but I don't see how any of them would make a difference if I still have a hiatal hernia. At least he doesn't say that the over-the-counter pills are harmful, only the prescription ones are bad. I still don't like the idea of taking those pills every day and sometimes twice a day.

  4. You're right to stop taking the pills -- they reduce the acid you need to properly digest your food, which is what causes the reflux. Please check out Mike Eades' blog -- he discusses this and has suffered from it himself. Also check out Norm Robillard's website. His low fermentable fiber diet will probably help. His book costs $20 or so, but you might find it money well spent. It helped me and my husband. Good luck!

  5. In fact I was just over at Norm Robillard's blog DigestiveHealthInstitute.org and his April 16 post deals with acid reflux and has links to Mike Eades' post as well.
