Thursday Shopping Bargains

I did go to Aldi this morning and there's good news and not so good news. The good news is that the eggs are still 99-cents a dozen. The not so good news is that a gallon of milk is now $2.19 instead of $1.99. That's still cheaper than Kroger and there's a good chance that I will only have to buy milk for another couple of weeks. Once my son moves out, I won't have any reason to buy milk anymore or the cereal to put it on either.

MUSHROOM BURGER SCRAMBLE
I got some good deals at Aldi and only two of them were advertised. The two advertised specials that inticed me to go there were the pound of broccoli crowns for 79-cents and the 8-ounce packages of baby bella mushrooms for 79-cents each. I'm planning to make my Mushroom Burger Scramble tomorrow with the mushrooms and I'll serve it with the broccoli topped with browned butter.

Speaking of butter, Aldi had butter for only $1.49 per pound so I got three pounds. I did get a dozen eggs for 99-cents and three packages of cheese for $1.79 each. I also picked up a can of parmesan cheese for $2.39, which is less that I'd pay at Kroger even with my discount. The last unadvertised special was a pint of grape tomatoes for just 59-cents. I almost passed them up because they didn't look very nice. But, there was one container of nice red ones sitting there just for me.

There are three packages of cheese in the photo that are from Kroger. That was on sale for $1.88 per package.

  1. I am glad you found some good deals. It seems like they are far and few between anymore.

I thought of you the other day when I was out shopping. I was looking at the shredded cheese and saw that a couple of brands are putting potato starch in them, now. I hadn't noticed that before. You really have to keep up on the labels. Same thing with prices, they are creeping up all over the place. Anyway, I'm going to have to start grating my own cheese again, I had gotten out of the habit, and am going to have to go back to it. Hope you have a good week! *Dawn

    1. Hi Dawn. I had noticed that most brands put starch in their shredded cheese but I do buy it for certain things. I mostly use the pre-shredded when I make quiche because I can quickly assemble it and get it in the oven in the morning. Lazy; I know. Whenever I use Swiss cheese in a quiche, I have to shred that because I can't get that pre-shredded. I've been buying Swiss at Aldi lately because they sell it in 8-ounce blocks. Kroger's are only 6 ounces but they charge the same price as their 8-ounce blocks. Is there something special about Swiss cheese that makes it more expensive than other cheeses???

I know what you mean about the price creep lately. I used to get ribeye T-bone and NY Strip steaks marked down to $1.99 pound but I haven't seen that price in a couple of years now. I rarely see ground beef for 99-cents marked down anymore either. Now I consider anything under $2.00 per pound to be a decent price on ground beef. Every now and then I still find Boston butt pork roasts on sale for 99-cents per pound but not nearly as often as I used to.

  2. I'm sure you get tired of hearing from all the people who like your site(s), but nevertheless I feel compelled to tell you: I like your photography, I like your menus, I like your recipes (and have agreed with your ratings of the ones I have cooked so far), and this is just since I found Linda's Low Carb Recipes. Today I found your blog; I like it, too! I thought the gently used clothing you found adorable and liked that you shared about the bargain. I would love to see some pix of your kitchen, and pantry, spice storage, freezer and frig; to see how you organize. Also, please do give us the lists of foodstuffs you mentioned you were going to share in one of the blogs. I live in CA, but I think our Ralph's is owned by Kroger, so I shall have to check it out as Von's and Albertson's are getting outrageous. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and please keep blogging. Is the boy still moving out? It will be interesting to see how you do it for two, both eating low carb, as it is only my hubby and I doing the same, but I suspect spending way, way too much from what I can tell. That is why I was hoping for the lists of your staples, etc. to get some of those purchases over with (I.e. Xantham

    1. Thanks, Sharon. Yes, our son is still talking about moving out in a week or two. He's waiting for an apartment to become available. I will try to post about some of the things you mentioned once he's gone and all the carby junk has been removed from my pantry and fridge.
