Thursday Shopping Bargains

I spent quite a bit more than usual this morning because Kroger had so many super sales that I couldn't pass up. Below is a list of everything that I bought today at Walmart and Kroger. When I buy craft supplies and clothing, etc. at Walmart, that comes out of my grocery budget so I've included those things in the list. I'm kind of regretting that I bought that pork roast on Tuesday at Food Town and paid $1.29 pound for it. Kroger has them on sale this week for only 79-cents per pound!
Walmart:
  • Clear Passage nasal strips - $6.67
  • 2 bottles black acrylic paint (.57 each) - $1.14 *
  • 1 package assorted jump rings - $2.00 *
  • Snapware storage container ($6.97) - $4.97 after $2.00 coupon *
  • Clean Shower - $1.97
  • Frozen ravioli - $2.72 (for the guys)
* The paint is for a craft project that I'm working on for Christmas. The jump rings are for a beading project and the Snapware container is also for my beading.

Kroger:

  • 24 ounce Kroger cottage cheese (1.99 on sale) after 40-cent coupon and senior discount - $1.39
  • 2 bottles Kroger OJ (2.50 on sale) after 75-cent coupon and senior discount - $3.75 for both
  • 18 ounce Kroger peanut butter - FREE with coupon
  • 8 ounce Kroger sour cream - after 40-cent coupon and senior discount - $.49
  • 3-pack Brita filters (they're $14.88 at Walmart) - after $2.50 coupon - $13.19
  • Community coffee ($3.50 on sale) - $3.50
  • 8 ounce Kroger cheese (on sale for $1.88 x 10) - after 50-cent and 75-cent coupons and senior discount - $15.50 ($1.57 each)
  • Kroger parmesan cheese - after senior discount - $2.36
  • 10 ounce Kroger frozen spinach - after senior discount - $.76
  • 2 Kroger Deluxe ice cream (for the guys) - after senior discount - $4.50 for both (not in the photo)
  • 2 Boston butt roasts (.79 pound on sale) - after $1.50 meat coupon - $9.17 for both

GRAND TOTAL - $76.62

If I had paid full price for those two pork roasts, they would have cost $33.61! The regular price for everything that I bought today would have been about $129.00 so I saved $52.00.

When I got home from shopping, I prepped the ingredients to make chicken fajitas. I was going to grill the chicken, peppers and onions outside on the grill but decided that it was just too darn hot to stand outside cooking. So, I stir-fried the peppers and onions in my wok and cooked the chicken in my countertop grill. I also made a batch of Cilantro Pepita Sauce to put on the fajitas.

  1. Hi Linda
While shopping today, I saw and then purchased a tube of tomato paste, and according to the label, it is "double concentrated". How would I use this in a recipe calling for a 6 oz can of tomato paste?
Also, do you have a ballpark carb count on this product?
[I had never see or used this before!].

    Thanks!

    1. No nutritional info yet but I found some comments about using it here: http://www.thekitchn.com/-good-questions-87-122481. Most seem to be using it 1:1 as they would use canned tomato paste but then they're probably not concerned about the carbs.

    2. Here's the break-down for Amore brand, which is the one that America's Test Kitchen prefers:

      2 tablespoons (4.5 per tube)
      30 calories
      0g fat
      5g carb
      2g protein

    3. Thanks so much, that will help a lot. The brand is Cento and the nutritional info is 7 grams carb, 1 gram fiber, per 1 serving, which is 34 ml. Since I know didly about the metric system, that does not help at all.
The entire tube weighs 4.56 oz. 1 serving = 35 calories.
I emailed the company and asked for more information when substituting for tomato paste in a can. Guess I will wait and see what they say as well before using it.
      Thanks again.

  2. Hi squirrel. I've never used that kind before and I know nothing about it. I'll see what I can find out for you. Is there no nutritional info on the label?

  3. Hi Linda, just wanted to say thanks again for the ideas on what to buy this week at Kroger. Since I live in Louisiana, we have the same specials here as you do. That pork roast sounds like a really good deal!

    1. Hi plinnell. Looks like we're neighbors. The pork roast and Community coffee specials require a minimum $10 purchase and there's a limit of two of each. That obviously wasn't an issue for me. I also had to spend at least $7.00 in the meat department to use the $1.50 meat coupon. That's one reason why I bought two pork roasts. I could have bought a larger one that was at least $7.00 but I decided that I'd rather spend a little more and put two smaller roasts in my freezer. It might be a while before they have such a great price again.

  4. Hi Linds, I made a half recipe of your coconut chicken recipe for our supper tonight. It was delicious.
Thank you for your website, it makes low carbing easy.

  5. Just tried using your search tool and it is now working just fine for me. Thought you would like to know. I use Google Chrome and I had to switch to Firefox in order to use the tool prior.

    1. I'm glad to hear that. Doesn't it seem odd though that a Google Search tool didn't work with a Google browser?

    2. Yes it is. I also have to use Firefox in order to post comments! Chrome will not work.
      It is crazy..........................

    3. That makes no sense at all since this blog is sponsored by Google.

Just found your Better Than Heinz Ketchup recipe. How long will it keep in the fridge?

    Thanks

    1. I'm not sure which one you were looking at but this is the one that I make all the time now:

      http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/evenbetter_heinz_ketchup.html

It seems to keep for a very long time or at least I've never had any go bad. I've had some in the fridge for many weeks or even a couple of months or longer and it was still good. I kind of lose track because I don't use ketchup that often. I do put the date on the top of the jar and I just checked my latest batch. I made it in June and it's still fine.

  7. Do those nose strips work as good as the leading brand? I would love to find a cheaper brand. Thanks in advance, Alison

    1. They don't work as well as Breathe Right strips but they work well enough that I can't justify spending the extra money on the more expensive ones. I was also having trouble removing the Breathe Right ones in the morning and I don't have that problem with the Clear Passage strips. The Breathe Right strips felt like I was going to rip the skin off my nose and they left all that sticky gunk behind. I was also starting to get a bit of a groove in my nose from wearing them. That was with the clear ones. The opaque Breathe Right strips were even harder to remove. I wish I didn't have to use them at all but I can't breathe through my nose at night without them and I hate waking up with a dry mouth from breathing through my mouth all night.

    2. I forgot to check again for your reply, thank you. I am so glad that you posted this. I bought the Clear Passage strips. I used it for the first time last night. Seem to work fine, it was easier to remove and felt lighter on my nose and sooo much cheaper. I too wish I didn't have to use them. Thanks a bunch. Please do include other things you buy in your posts...Alison
