This week's grocery bargains

I did my weekly grocery shopping today and Kroger had a few good deals this week. If you spend at least $10, you can get 18 large eggs for $1.50. They also have their butter for $1.99 per pound and 16 ounce bags or chunks of their store brand cheese for $2.99. I stocked up on butter, got two cartons of the eggs and a bag of shredded mozzarella.

Also, while I was at Walmart today, I noticed that they have small packets of xanthan gum near the gluten free products. It's Hodgson Mill brand and you get .32 ounces (9 grams) for 48¢. I haven't calculated it to see if that's a good deal compared to buying the large bags of Bob's Red Mill or not but it's very handy, and cheap, for those who won't use it all that often.

  1. thanks for the tips! Kroger is my go-to store here in Louisiana. Definitely have to stock up on eggs, butter and cheese. Also, the new blog looks great!

  2. Please let me know if you find the Google ads to be too obnoxious. I had no idea that they would be so huge.

  3. I've learned to totally ignore ads on blogs, so I wouldn't worry about it, Linda. Thanks for the tips on the sale at Kroger. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with things like that and your reminder is helpful.

  4. I think that the ads might not be visible if you've got AdBlock running. In that case, there's probably a huge empty space below my posts.

    1. I take it that you don't see the ad below my posts, right? I have ads enabled in Firefox for my blog so that I can see what they look like and know that they're working properly. I find the belly fat one to be particularly offensive.

    2. Nope, no ads at all. I can do without belly fat as well, LOL.

    3. Squirrel, I accidentally deleted your comment about the ads. I was wondering what a setting would do and clicked on one that I thought might allow me to edit someone's comment but it actually deletes them. Oops! Sorry about that.

  6. Hi Linda, I live in Texas about an hour and half from you. Do you know of a local source for Golden Flaxmeal? I used to be able to get it at my locat grocery, but not seeing it there anymore. Was wondering if you know if Kroger's or HEB sells it? Thanks!

    1. Hi Beth. I'm not sure if I've seen any around here either. It's been a long time since I last bought any and I ordered it from Netrition. I did see flax meal at HEB last week but I didn't look to see if it was the regular or the golden. I'm pretty sure that Kroger only has the regular dark flax (Bob's Red Mill). HEB does seem to be carrying a lot more of those kinds of products though so I think that would be the first place I'd look.

    2. Hi Beth, If you have a Central Market near you, they sell it in their bulk bins.

  7. Just found your blog. I'm trying to make the switch to low carb eating. Your recipes look wonderful, but I'm wondering how long you've been doing this and if you have been able to lose weight on this. And what is your cholesterol level????

    1. I started low carbing in July of 2002 and reached my goal weight in May of 2003. I've been maintaining my weight loss ever since (10 years). You can read about it on my main site: http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/. I've never had my cholesterol tested.
